Installation of 250mm Water Main under the A22

We are working with Clancy again on this project, aiming to get a 250mm water main under the A22 for SSE in Surrey.

The road serves a major commuter route for the surrounding areas and so the continued and uninterrupted flow of traffic was a priority - Setting up on the far verge, well back from the road, allowed us to comfortably achieve this goal.

The new pipe would need to be installed at 4.5m below the surface at its deepest point to avoid pre-existing infrastructure along the proposed bore path. The ground conditions were changeable, ranging from peat and clay to much harder ground formations including some rocky ground – the ground was so hard at the end of the shot that the Clancy operators weren’t able to dig a significant proportion of the reception pit with a bucket, having to use the hydraulic breaker to reach the required depth.

Despite the hard ground, we were able to complete the installation to all required specifications, on time and well within budget. Furthermore, due the small working footprint of the HDD set up with the 24x40, traffic flow was completely unaffected by the works.
