About Us

What we do...

With decades of experience and as a trusted HDD supplier for many of the UK's leading construction companies, utility providers,  private landowners and SME's, we are here to offer you a professional, affordable and highly skilled trenchless solution for your next installation. Based in the heart of the Midlands, we are ideally placed for nationwide operation.

We specialise in trenchless utility installation, specifically Horizontal Directional Drilling - it may be helpful at this stage to briefly outline what HDD is: In simple terms, Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is a method of creating a fully steerable pilot borehole along a predetermined bore path in order to create a tunnel. Utilising state of the art location technology and agile subsurface steering capability, this borehole can be straight or steered around obstacles and existing services. Following sufficient enlargement using reaming tools (to around +25% of the product pipe), the completed tunnel is used to pull a pipeline into place.

At MTA Drill Tec, we use state of the art technology, class leading HDD equipment, highly skilled and experienced personnel to offer our clients the most efficient, cost effective and productive Directional Drilling service possible.

For a more in depth look at how HDD works, we have included several items in our Media Resource section - just follow the "What is HDD" link below.

Mark Ambler, MTA Drill Tec Company Director

People often ask me what the real world advantages to HDD are over open cutting or trenching techniques; It is my honest opinion that in the vast majority of cases, the HDD model is the best overall option for utility installation.

I've been operating within the Directional Drilling industry for more than 30 years, it has undoubtedly changed during this time. Innovations in technology, constant improvements to the tooling and drill rigs as well as the tightening up of required competencies for operators has resulted in a highly effective, safe, and precise method of utility installation.

I believe that up to now, Directional Drilling has been largely underused in an industry which historically, has been slow to innovate - companies tend to open cut and trench in their utilities because that is how they've always done it - I am glad to say that this seems to be changing - companies who have always solely relied on traditional trenched methods have begun to shift towards Directional Drilling, driven largely by a desire for increased productivity and reduced environmental impact.

The HDD method of installation offers a reliable, easy to plan and short construction programme, allowing our clients to increase productivity while reducing reinstatement works. So, the answer that I give when I'm asked about the real world advantages of HDD is always the same...

Lower costs, reduced environmental impact, diminished disturbance to communities while offering increased productivity and boosting profit margins.
